A lifeboat crew in St Abbs, Berwickshire, were in for a big surprise on their latest training mission this week, as gold medallist Rebecca Adlington and Richmond surprised them with a very special thank you.
A national poll by Richmond Sausages recently revealed lifeboat crews as one of the UK’s favourite workforces – so it teamed up with Rebecca to use boats, helicopters, and breakfast for the whole village to celebrate the crew and community.
The unsuspecting lifeboat crew took to the water on what they believed to be a training mission, until they were intercepted at sea by Rebecca on another boat – followed swiftly by a helicopter drop of hot Richmond sausage baps to be taken back to shore for a breakfast for the crew and their village. To add to their surprise, the whole village, including the crew’s friends and family, were also in on the secret – waiting back by the lifeboat station to give the crew a heroes’ welcome and kick off the celebrations.
Rebecca Adlington, said “The crew at St Abbs are constantly putting their lives on the lines to help others so it was a real honour to be able to give them something back and say thank you. It was such a fun and rewarding experience – especially seeing that helicopter coming over the horizon – and I hope that Richmond and I gave them a morning to remember.”
St Abbs Lifeboat Station has been running since 1911, but lost national funding in 2015, nearly forcing its closure – however the whole community pulled together to raise the funds needed to keep the crucial, life-saving operation going to keep local residents and visitors to the area safe at sea.
Euan Gibson, St Abbs Lifeboat spokesperson, added “We rely solely on support and donations, as they allow us to continue our proud tradition of saving lives at sea – so to have this recognition for the crew from the nation, Rebecca and Richmond was fantastic.
Richmond’s ‘Nations Favourite’ project will see the famous sausage brand travel up and down the country to celebrate and say thank you to the workforces voted as our national favourites.
